When our dog / puppy is vocalizing either through whining, barking or howling, it is good to have a cue to have him/her stop what he/she is doing. There are other force free training methods that can be used for the underlying reasons however this one can be useful at times. It is important however to find out why the vocalization is happening and for many reasons, not to inhibit the vocalization all together.
It is important that you do not use force or intimidation to stop your dog / puppy from vocalizing. Teaching him / her the cue and giving tools for reacting to things that make her bark for example are way more useful. Also do not stop a dog from growling as it is a communication that is telling you that if something is not done, there will likely be an escalation in their reaction. It does not mean that they are aggressive but that they are very uncomfortable.
